COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY CLOSED
Military and Police Move In As Students Evacuated — Officials Tight-Lipped
New York City — In a surprise development that has the whole town buzzing, Columbia University was shut down without warning late last night. Faculty, students, and staff were ordered to vacate the premises as New York Police cordoned off the entire campus grounds. Reports indicate that elements of the 1st Army from Governors Island have been dispatched to assist in maintaining order.
University President Nicholas Murray Butler and the Board of Regents have offered no explanation for the sudden closure. Mayor Fiorello La Guardia’s office declined to comment, fueling speculation about what’s happening behind the locked gates of the Ivy League institution.
Police Chief O’Malley told the Interstate News Network this morning, “There’s nothing to worry your head about — the boys in blue have things well in hand.”
Still, jittery students are being relocated from dormitories to temporary housing in Morningside Heights and the Upper West Side. The cause of the closure remains shrouded in mystery, and the city is on edge.
